Antoninus Pius adopterades av kejsare Hadrianus som tronföljare den 25 februari år 138 e,Kr. Den här utbjuda guldaureusen är präglad, under Hadrianus regeringstid, den korta perioden då Antoninus Pius var tronföljare 25 februari-10 juli. Historical context - Adoptive emperors
The term adoptive emperor is applied to the emperors from Nerva to Marcus Aurelius because they each adopted their respective successor. The special characteristic was that the successor supposedly came from outside the family: The reason why the successor, per adoption, should be the ideal form of rulership as he was chosen for his good abilities rather then relationship.

Antoninus was born in A.D. 86 and adopted a senatorial career and was first consul in A.D 120. He was adopted by emperor Hadrian as heir to the throne in February 25th A.D 138, and during Hadrians last months he was the virtual ruler of the empire.His succession on July 10th was smooth.  Antoninus finally died in Lorium in march 7th A.D 161, and was succeeded by Marcus Aurelius who had been selected by Hadrian as the eventual heir to the throne.
